Council elections deliver a mixed message — and a warning to everyone

The results from yesterday's local elections defied easy interpretation, with every major party able to point to gains in some areas and devastating losses in others.

Labour lost control of two flagship metropolitan councils but held off serious challenges in several southern marginals. The Conservatives picked up seats in the so-called 'Blue Wall' but bled support to Reform in the Midlands.

The Liberal Democrats had perhaps the most consistent night, quietly adding to their growing collection of southern shire councils — a pattern that should worry Conservative strategists eyeing the next general election.

Turnout, at just 28% nationally, told its own story: voters are exhausted, sceptical and increasingly willing to use local ballots to send national messages.

All party leaders will be reading the runes carefully over the weekend.
