Tiny Scottish island becomes UK's first fully solar-powered village

After eight years of fundraising, planning and one very stubborn planning appeal, the inhabitants of Eigg have officially become the first community in the United Kingdom to run entirely on renewable solar energy.

The £4.6 million project combines a south-facing solar farm with battery storage capable of powering every home, café and croft on the island for up to four winter days without sunlight.

Locals describe a 'quiet revolution': no fanfare, no royal visit, just a steady hum from the new substation and the satisfying click of the diesel generator being switched off for what residents hope is the final time.

Energy analysts say Eigg's model could be replicated by dozens of other small communities across the Highlands and Islands, though grid connection rules remain a major obstacle elsewhere.

The Scottish Government has hinted at a new funding stream to follow Eigg's lead, with an announcement expected during the upcoming Holyrood recess.
