SNP leadership contest narrows to three — and one name is shaking Holyrood
A wildcard candidate from the backbenches has emerged as the membership's surprise favourite.
The race to lead the SNP has narrowed to three candidates, with nominations closing at 5pm yesterday — and the appearance on the ballot of backbencher Fiona MacAllister has caught the party establishment completely off guard.
MacAllister, a relative unknown outside her Aberdeen constituency, secured the required nominations with hours to spare, reportedly thanks to a coordinated push by the party's grassroots activist network.

Internal polling now suggests she could realistically pose a threat to both frontrunners, particularly among younger members frustrated with what they describe as 'a decade of cautious managerialism'.
Her policy platform is notably more radical on independence strategy, energy nationalisation and rent controls — issues that have all but disappeared from official SNP messaging in recent years.
The first hustings is scheduled for Friday in Dundee. It is expected to be a fiery affair.
